water pollution

Definition

(1)Any impairment of the suitability of water for any beneficial use, actual or potential, by any organism, including man, by any foreign matter added thereto. (2) Intensive aquaculture can, if not properly controlled, contribute to water pollution through excessive release of nutrients (ammonia excretion through gills, faeces and lost food), leading to hypernutrification of the receiving water and/or benthic sediment enrichment with organic solids (in the case of fish farming). In most countries, pollution caused by aquaculture is regulated through water quality standards for effluents or through limiting production levels in water-based systems.
