thermal stratification

Definition

The division of a water body into layers of different temperature and density, owing to the development of a thermocline. The transitional layer can be very narrow, especially in small freshwater lakes and deep aquacultural ponds where thermal stratification often remains stable only during summer stagnation. Alternatively, the layers can be relatively extended, as is often the case in oceanic systems.
