Definition

The zone of rapid temperature change in a thermally-stratified body of water, the layer of water (horizontal temperature discontinuity layer) between the warm upper layer (cf. epilimnion in freshwater) and the cool bottom layer. The principal thermocline in deep lakes and oceans are either seasonal, due to heating of the surface water in summer, or permanent.
