Definition

The more or less intimate and continuous association between individuals of two or more species. If the relationship is mutually beneficial, it is called mutualism. If it is beneficial to one of the individuals (symbiont) with little effect (beneficial or harmful) on the other (host), it is termed commens- alism. If it is beneficial to the symbiont and harmful in various degrees, including fatal, to the host, it is termed parasitism.
