standard error

Definition

The standard error is a measure of the potential degree of discrepancy between the sample mean and the (usually) unknown population mean. It requires interval-level measurement and is used in certain tests of statistical significance and for creating confidence intervals. Standard error cannot be computed exactly, but it can be estimated by dividing the standard deviation by the square root of the number of cases.
