A periodic oscillation of a body of water whose period is determined by the resonant characteristics of the containing basin as controlled by the physical dimensions; usually attributed to strong winds or changes in barometric pressure; found both in enclosed bodies of water (such as the Baltic) and superimposed upon the tide waves of the open ocean.
