mangrove

Definition

A tidal salt marsh community dominated by trees and shrubs, particularly of the genus Rhizophora, of the genus Avicennia, many of which produce adventitious aerial roots. If cleared for pond construction, the underlying soil is found to be acidic. If the ponds are not treated with lime, good productivity can only be achieved after several years of use.
