Definition

At any point on the earth's surface, the horizontal direction of the earth's magnetic lines of force (direction of a magnetic meridian) toward the north magnetic pole, i.e., a direction indicated by the needle of the magnetic compass, magnetic north, rather than the true north, is the common 00 (360Γ0 reference in much navigational practice, including the designation of airport runway alignment. A heading or course toward magnetic north would be written : 00 mag.
