fouling organisms

Definition

In power plants, fouling organisms may become attached to the screens, condenser tube walls, and other parts of the cooling system, thereby reducing heat transfer and accelerating corrosion. In aquaculture systems they mainly impede water flow (net cages, water pipes) and reduce the lifetime of netting material and other structures. Examples in aquaculture are algae, ascidians, barnacles, polychaetes.
