ecological niche

Definition

The conceptual space occupied by a species, which includes both the physical space as well as the functional role of the species; conceptualized as a multidimensional hypervolume, the coordinates of which are the various parameters affecting the existence of the species. These parameters include both physico-chemical factors (e.g., temperature, salinity, pH) and biological factors (e.g., competition/ predation, food availability). Sometimes erroneously used as the equivalent of microhabitat. A species can occupy different niches during the course of its development.
