Ekman transport

Definition

The movement of ocean water caused by wind blowing steadily over the surface; if the wind drift current is integrated over all depths, there is then a net transport of water which occurs at 900 to the wind direction. This right-angle forcing causes significant movement of surface water (i.e. the flow is to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere) with the resulting phenomena of both upwelling and downwelling, depending on wind direction and geographical area.
