enhancement

Definition

Enhancement is defined as the release of fish (e.g. salmon) from a fish culture facility for the puspose of enlarging the wild population. It is not necessarily intended that the fish should be recaptured at any later stage. Enhancement takes a range of forms, that may vary from the seeding of unfed fry into the same locations from which their parents were obtained, to ranching itself. Planting unfed fry is the simplest of enhancement techniques; the level of intervention is relatively low. However mating patterns are imposed on adults and greatly simplified in comparison with natural spawning.
