DNA

Definition

Deoxyribonucleic acid; the primary genetic material of a cell. A polymer of the deoxyribo- nucleotides ; deoxyadenine triphosphate, deoxyguanine triphosphate, deoxycytosine triphosphate and deoxy- thymine triphosphate. Typically the polynucleotide chains occur in the form of a double helix. The sequence of nucleotide pairings in the chains is the basis of the genetic code (q.v). DNA molecules are the largest biologically active molecules known.
