best available technology (BAT)

Definition

BATs are used by the industry in conjunction with BATNEECs (Best Available Technology Not Entailing Excessive Cost) as an acceptable method of controlling environmental impacts. European and international legislation supports the use of Best Environmental Practice/Best Available Techniques in a two-tier approach to environmental controls using Environmental Quality Standards. Some regulatory authorities incorporate in their aquaculture licence/permit/ consent procedures the requirement to use Best Available Technology to minimize environmental impacts (e.g., sea-lice infection and frequency of treatment).
