Definition

(1) In oceanography: the back flow of water which follows the breaking of a wave; it scours and carries the finer material towards deeper water where it is temporarily deposited. (2) In biofiltration for aquaculture: any regeneration of gravel filters through back flushing in order to remove accumulated particles from the filter and prevent clogging.
