bioluminescence

Definition

Light produced by living organisms (e.g. plankton and fishes). It is most extensively developed in midwater and bottom- dwelling deep sea species (e.g. lantern fishes). It arises from (a) luminous bacteria living on the fish in a symbiotic relationship or (b) from photophores. Bioluminescence may serve as courting behaviour or as a lure for prey.
