biochemical oxyegen demand (BOD)

Definition

The amount of oxygen consumed by respiratory processes of bacteria and the oxidation of organic material which measured in a water sample maintained in darkness at a specified temperature for a specified amount of time. Standard BOD determinations are for 5-day incubations at 200C (BOD 5). It should always be stated whether a water sample has been filtered (soluble BOD) or not (total BOD). The biochemical oxygen demand is often wrongly reported as biological oxygen demand. Nitrifying bacteria present in high concentrations in water samples from aquaculture units must be inhibited by 2µg/l thio-urea to obtain correct BOD readings.
