ZOUGER (ZOUG) JAR

Definition

A bottle-shaped device used for the incubation of aquatic eggs. Originally conceived for fish eggs, the device is now also used, in modified form, for invertebrate eggs. Water supplied from the bottom through the downwardly pointing neck of the jar, flows upwards through the device. The flow rate is adjusted, according to the buoyancy and biomass of the incubated eggs, so that the eggs are maintained in suspension and adequate gas exchange occurs. The water outlet is often covered by a fine-mesh grid to prevent the loss of hatched larvae.
