COLUMNARIS DISEASE

Definition

An acute systemic and cutaneous disease of freshwater fishes caused by Flexibacter columnaris. The disease is widespread and occurs most frequently during the summer in young-of-the-year fish. Losses are usually quite high. In warm water fish there is frequently a dual infection with Aeromonas liquefaciens. The disease is effectively controlled by systemic and external antibacterials.
