WITHDRAWAL PERIOD

Definition

The time between end of drug treatment and slaughter which must be observed so that the residues of the drug may reach levels which present no hazard to the consumer. This period is related to the metabolic rate. For homoiothermic organisms withdrawal times are therefore set in terms of days. For poecilotherms (i.e., most aquaculture species) the best approach is to set withdrawal time in terms of degree-days. Syn. with-holding period; clearance time.
