VENTRAL

Definition

Anatomical term used to describe part of the body plan of an organism, the opposite pole being termed posterior; the poles carry the mouth and anus respectively. In respect of the axis between the poles, the body plan may be divided into dorsal, ventral and lateral regions. In vertebrates the vertebral column and nerve cord are dorsal. In invertebrates, however, the nerve cord is ventral. In fishes the anatomical orientation of the regions is very evident.
