VERTICAL TRANSMISSION OF DISEASE
VECTOR(Disease vector)
Definition
Living carrier or transporter of a symbiont (generally meaning a parasite) from a definitive host back to another individual of the same host species. If the parasite goes through a developmental stage in the carrier, the latter is known as a metacyclic or biological vector; if there is no change (including no multiplication) in or of the parasite, the carrier is called a mechanical or contamination vector (an outstanding example is the housefly); the metacyclic vector has also been considered an essential "Intermediate Host".
