Definition
A sudden drastic change in water temperature affecting different body functions, manifested as altered heartbeat, change in blood pressure and haemolysis, breakdown of gill capillaries and causing stress, etc; such events significantly affect fish performance and may cause death. Heat shock is used to induce polyploidy in aquaculture species during the early developmental stage.
