TRIMETHOPRIM

Definition

Potentiated sulphonamides block a different stage of folic acid metabolism to other sulphonamides. The ratio of sulphonamide to potentiator should ideally be based upon the pharmacokinetic behaviour of the two drugs. Such data, however, are scarce for fish. The most common potentiated sulphonamide in use is co-trimazineTM [sulphadiazine:trimethoprim (5:1)]. Other potentiated sulphonamides include sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim (TribrissenTM), sulphamerazine/trimethoprim and sulphamethazine/trimethoprim (ROMET TM).
