TROUT

Definition

A commonly used, non-specific name for a large range of fish species of the genera (Salmo, Oncorhynchus and Salvelinus) of the family Salmonidae. Confusion has arisen with the use of this term because of different colloquial regional usages and the fact that representatives of the genera are termed salmon and charr. Examples of trout include: Salmo trutta, the brown trout; Salvelinus fontinalis, the brook trout and Oncorhynchus mykiss the rainbow trout. Various trout species are now found distributed in all continents, because of translocation/introduction, but members are native in the northern hemisphere and holarctic regions. It is recommended that more exact common names to distinct taxonomic names are used.
