TESTOSTERONE

Definition

The major androgenic hormone that is produced in the vertebrate testis under the control of pituitary gonadotropic hormones. The steroid hormone controls primary and secondary sexual characters and in some cases reproductive behaviour. the testosterone precursor keto-testosterone (androsterone) is administered to fish, usually by means of diet, in order to affect growth and sexual maturation rates (e.g. in Red drum Sciaenops ocellatus). Stocks of Tilapia aurea are produced by treating newly-hatched fry with the testosterone analogue methyl-testosterone. This procedure is subject to regulatory control.
