RECIRCULATION SYSTEM

Definition

A closed or partially-closed system employed in aquaculture production where the effluent water from the system is treated to enable its reuse. Usually, a relatively small portion of the actual water flow or system volume is exchanged per unit time. It is more appropriate to indicate clearly the degree of recirculation (e.g. percentage of volume flow or system volume per unit time) rather than to use the terms' closed' or 'open' systems. Often the term 'closed system' is incorrectly used as there will always be some water loss either due to leakage or evaporation, which necessitates topping up.
