OXYGEN DEBT

Definition

The cumulative effect of an oxygen deficit endured by an organism or a tissue or organ of that organism. This is represented by the accumulation of anaerobic end-product metabolites. The oxygen debt is redressed when a normal oxygen supply is restored. This is observed as a momentary increase in normal oxygen consumption and corresponds to the oxidation of the accumulated anaerobic end products. An oxygen debt may be incurred when aquatic organisms are subjected to environmental hypoxia or during bouts of intense activity.
