CONGESTION

Definition

(1) Excessive or abnormal accumulation of blood in a part of a tissue or an organ so that the natural functions are hindered. It may be active (often called hyperaemia) or passive. Passive congestion is the result of abnormal venous return and is characterized by dark cyanotic blood. (2): Gill congestion: accumulation of excessive amounts of mucus in the gill area, impeding the respiratory function in fish.
