NITRATE

Definition

A compound which contains nitrogen bound to three oxygen atoms. The end product of the aerobic stabilization of organic nitrogen; presence in water indicates organic enrichment or agricultural or industrial contamination. In contrast to nitrites, nitrates are generally of low toxicity to fish. Water in rearing units can, therefore be detoxified by oxidizing nitrites to nitrates. Often used as fertilizer in pond culture.
