MASCULINIZATION

Definition

Technique of inducing genotypically female fish to produce sperm. In some species of fish,e.g. salmonids, it is a relatively easy procedure and economically as well as ecologically advantageous to produce offspring comprising only female fish. It is achieved by inducing masculinization in female broodstock through administering a diet containing the appropriate sex steroid. The female fish that undergo masculinization produce sperm with homogametic ( XX) chromosomes, and thus crossing with normal eggs produces an all-female cohort.
