LOBSTER (Homarus)

Definition

(Common lobster Homarus gammarus). Class crustacea, Sub order Reptantia, division Macura. Walking decapods which live on the shore or sea bed. First pair of walking legs carry unequal but very large pincers. Colour, blue-black; turns red when boiled; habitat; among rocks, in cracks, holes and caves. Distribution; Mediterranean, Atlantic, English Channel, North Sea and west Baltic. Lobsters are maintained in ponds during the enclosed fishing seasons (Canada, Norway and France) and cultured for trial ranching.
