HIGH ENERGY DIETS

Definition

Diets that are formulated to provide adequate levels of protein and contain elevated oil levels (>20%). The basic concept in such formulations is that the oil component provides sufficient energy for basic metabolism, thus sparing the protein for somatic growth. Oil (fat) is the richest dietary energy source, and consequently such diets are termed "high energy". Feeding of high energy diets should be monitored carefully to avoid high fat levels in the fish flesh.
