WHIRLING DISEASE

Definition

(1)A disease of trout caused by the sporozoan protozoan Mi>Myxosoma cerebralis manifested in circular movements of fish around their vertical axis (so- called "tail hunting"). Myxosoma penetretes destructively into the cephalic structures. Trout fingerlings are particularly at risk. Infectivity decreases with increasing ossification of the headbones. (2) A disease of squid characterized by spinning due to loss of nervous control which may be caused by lack of strontium in the rearing water.
