CHANNEL CATFISH VIRUS DISEASE (CCVD)

Definition

A disease caused by a herpes virus which is infectious to channel catfish and blue catfish. Recently a similar disease of blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) was detected. Losses in channel catfish fingerlings (I. punctatus) have been quite high. A typical outbreak may last for several weeks and be complicated by dual infections with Aeromonas liquefaciens and Chondrococcus columnaris. Recommended control methods include using fingerlings only from sources shown to be free of the disease, maintenance of high dissolved oxygen levels, and rigid sanitation practices.
