Genus of oysters important in coastal aquaculture, the cupped oyster (C. gigas) originates in the northern Pacific, has been widely transplanted and is now the dominant species in oyster aquaculture. The American Atlantic oyster (C. virginica) occurs naturally from Connecticut to Long Island Sound, New York. C. angulata, the Portuguese oyster, is the European species of the genus, commonly cultured along the Atlantic coast. C. commercialis, the rock oyster is native to Australia.
