IVERMECTIN

Definition

A macrolide antibiotic (avermectin) produced from a fungus, shown to be effective against internal and external arthropod and nematode parasites of mammals. Acts as an agonist for the neurotransmitter gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) found in the peripheral nervous system in invertebrates in contrast to the CNS of mammals. Has been trialled as an in-feed treatment for salmonids infested with sea lice but not recommended for use in water because of its long half-life.
