INTERLEUKIN

Definition

Glycoproteins secreted by a variety of leucocytes that have effects on other leucocytes, i.e., stimulating growth and promoting differentiation. A range of interleukins has been identified in fish. Their activities include involvement in the recognition of foreign antigens by T cells, amplifying the proliferation of activated T cells, attracting macrophages and increasing the effectiveness of phagocytic ingestion of microorganisms by enhancing the macrophage’s respiratory burst activity, promoting haemopoetic cell growth.
