INFECTIOUS SALMON ANAEMIA (ISA)

Definition

A contagious viral disease of farmed Atlantic salmon found in Norway, Canada and Scotland. The causative agent, ISAV, is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus of the Orthomyxoviridae family. ISA is a notifiable List 1 disease under EU fish health regulations, characterised by severe anaemia, darkening of the liver, enlargement and darkening of the spleen, haemorrhage of the visceral organs, accumulation of fluid in the body cavity and high rate of mortality.
