IONIC REGULATION

Definition

Process by which fish maintain and control their ionic balance, i.e. osmoregulate. Freshwater fish achieve this by actively taking up salt and producing large quantities of dilute urine. Conversely, saltwater fish excrete sodium salts, drink large quantities of water and produce small quantities of concentrated urine.
