IONIC STRENGTH

Definition

The total concentration of ions in a solution given by the formula I = 1/2 ∑ mi zi2; where I: ionic strength, mi: the molar concentration of the ith species and zi: the charge of ionic species i. For electrolyte solutions with a 1/1 concentrations of anions to cations the ionic strength is equivalent to the molarity of the solution. For any other stoichiometry of ionic species the ionic strength is greater than the molarity of the solution. Syn. Ionic concentration.
