INCIDENCE

Definition

The number of new cases of a particular disease occurring within a specified period in a given population or unit of the population. Incidence may be expressed as a percentage if the number of new cases per unit of time is based upon a sample of known size; if the population size remains fairly stable, but is not exactly known, incidence may be expressed somewhat less precisely, but nevertheless usefully, as the number of new cases per unit of time for the entire population.
