HAEMORRHAGIC SEPTICAEMIA
Definition
Infectious disease affecting mainly cultured carp and salmonids, produced by the genus Rhabdovirus enhanced by secondary bacterial infection. Sources of infection include faeces from already infected fish, external parasites and fishing gear. Its symptoms are weakening, loss of balance, myopia, abdominal swelling, scale bristling, haemorrhages on skin and fins, resulting in high losses in cultures. Though treatment is difficult and not always effective, the risk of outbreaks can be reduced by good husbandry practices.
