MYTICOLA INTESTINALIS

Definition

Parasitic copepod of mussels which infects the small intestine of the host and causes local lesions in the epithelium. Infection impairs the filtration speed and the passage of food through the gut. The growth of the mussel can eventually be affected, but in general M. intestinalis has little effect if the mussels are held in optimal growth conditions (i.e abundant food and a low level of suspended solids).
