HEPATOMA

Definition

A tumour whose parenchymal cells are of hepatic origin and includes any tumour of the liver. It is more usual now to use the term "adenoma" for a benign liver tumour, and "hepatocellular carcinoma" for a malignant tumour of the liver. The toxin having the greatest tumorogenic properties for fishes is aflatoxin B1 from Aspergillus flavus. Aspergillus often thrives well in fish feeds, particularly in warm and humid climates and in situations where feeds are not properly stored. In integrated farming systems (e.g. fish-poultry combinations) they enter the aquatic food chain via food and faeces.
