GOSSYPOL

Definition

Toxic yellow phenolyic pigment component of cotton seed. Cotton seed meal is a waste product and potentially important alternative to soya meal as a partial substitute for fishmeal in aquaculture feeds. However, free gossypol is toxic; heat treatment reduces the toxicity but reduces protein quality. Genetic selection programmes are leading to the production of cotton seed without the pigment glands which produce gossypol.
