GLUCAN

Definition

A polysaccharide composed of D-glucose, naturally occurring in yeasts and fungi as water-soluble oliomeres, non-water soluble macromolecules and specific compounds. It assists defence mechanisms by stimulating production of antibiotics (phytoelaxins) in plants, the enzyme polyphenyloxidase in invertebrates, and in vertebrates, including fish, it activates non-specific and humoral immune defence mechanisms and phagocytes and increases levels of lysozyme and interferon, thereby strengthening resistance to viral, bacterial and fungal diseases. May be added to some commercially available fish diets to promote the functioning of the immune system.
