Definition
A species native to China and Eastern Siberia, commonly called the white Amur, it has been introduced worldwide and is now the most important aquaculture species in China, often produced in polyculture with other carp species. It occurs in lakes, ponds, pools, backwaters, preferring slow-flowing or stagnant waters. It feeds on plants and submerged grasses and has often been introduced for weed control, as it ingests the entire plant (including roots). It is a carrier of the cestode Bothriocephalus and is responsible for the transfer of this parasite to many parts of the world. Tolerant of low oxygen levels, it can thrive in a wide range of temperatures (up to 380 C.)
