Definition
A term for chemical oxygen consumption. COD is a measure of the amount of organic matter which can be oxidized by a strong chemical oxidant. It is expressed as the amount of oxygen which is equivalent to the oxidant used (dichromate) in a raw water sample. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) often permits an estimation of the BOD. COD determinations in brackish and marine waters are disturbed by the salt-matrix which must be removed.
