BOTHRIOCEPHALUS

Definition

Cestodes of the family Bothriocephalidae are characterised by the presence of operculated and unembryonated eggs. Certain species of Asian origin (B. gowkongensis ) introduced into Europe and the USA with the transfer of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) can cause difficulties in the pond culture of cyprinid fish. B. acheilognathi is the European freshwater species of the genus while B.scorpii occurs in European marine flatfish (Platichthys flesus) and turbot (Scopthamus maxima).
